Carlo Felice came to the Sardinian throne in 1821 only after his predecessor Carlo Alberto was forced to abdicate following a constitutional crisis he had briefly encouraged, then abandoned. The new king wanted nothing to do with liberal reform, and his reign was defined by rigid conservatism enforced with considerable force. The coinage issued under him reflects this retrenchment — a deliberate reassertion of dynastic authority through consistent, unambiguous royal imagery after years of political instability.
The Turin mint produced this series across nearly a decade with little variation. KM#122 is occasionally found with minor die differences across the emission years, though no major variety commands a significant premium.
