2 Lire Avezzano - n.91

Camp 91 at Avezzano was one of the larger Italian POW facilities of the Second World War, holding primarily British and Commonwealth prisoners captured in North Africa. Internal camp currencies like this 2 Lire note were a deliberate administrative tool — they prevented prisoners from accumulating Italian legal tender that might fund an escape attempt, while still allowing controlled access to canteen goods.

Signed by Ten. Col. Pietro Tirone, the camp commandant whose authorization gave these notes whatever purchasing power they carried within the wire. Redeemable nowhere else.
