The Ligurian Republic was a French client state carved out of the old Republic of Genoa following Napoleon's Italian campaign of 1796. Its coinage system was imposed to align with French Revolutionary decimal principles, replacing centuries of Genoese monetary tradition almost overnight. This 2 Lire issue from the republic's first full year of operation reflects that abrupt institutional transplant.
The republic lasted only until 1805, when Napoleon annexed it directly into France as the département of Gênes.
