Genoa's republic was in its final years when this issue entered circulation. French revolutionary forces under Napoleon seized the city in 1797, dissolving a republican government that had functioned, in various forms, since the twelfth century. Coins struck in the preceding years — this type among them — were produced by an institution that had no way of knowing it was operating on borrowed time.
The .888 fineness was slightly below the standard of many contemporary Italian state issues, a quiet signal of the fiscal strain Genoa was already under before the French arrived.
