Kibbutz scrip occupies a genuinely odd corner of Israeli notaphily. Shamir, founded in 1944 in the Upper Galilee by HaShomer HaTzair movement members, issued internal currency for use within the kibbutz economy — not as a substitute for Israeli pounds, but as a rationing and accounting mechanism for members who received goods and services collectively rather than wages. By 1971, most kibbutzim were winding down their internal scrip systems as the communal model evolved, making late-issue pieces like this one rarer in circulation grades than earlier series.

The yellow paper substrate was specific to this denomination within the Shamir series — a simple visual differentiator in an economy where quick identification mattered more than security printing.
