Joseph II's sweeping administrative reforms in the Austrian Netherlands — dissolving monasteries, suppressing guilds, attempting to replace local law with a unified imperial code — generated sustained popular resistance throughout the 1780s. The Brabant Revolution of 1789 ultimately drove Austrian administration from the territory entirely, making the final years of this issue some of the most politically turbulent under which any routine copper coinage has ever circulated. Production effectively ceased not from any mint decision but because the state issuing it had collapsed.
