Obverse description The Belgian lion rampant facing right, rendered in bold relief, holding a pike or lance surmounted by a liberty hat (Phrygian cap) in its raised forepaws — a symbol of the Brabantine Revolution. The lion stands on its hind legs with tail curled upward, occupying the full field of the coin. No legend appears on this side; the design is unframed and set against a plain field with a milled border.
