Issued as part of Bulgaria's commemorative program marking the centenary of Yordan Yovkov's birth, this coin honors the writer widely regarded as the finest prose stylist in Bulgarian literature. Yovkov died in 1937, his reputation firmly established but largely confined to Bulgarian-speaking audiences — a regional stature that made him an ideal subject for the nationalist cultural programming favored by the Zhivkov government throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
