Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, proclaimed on September 9, 1944, following the Soviet-backed Fatherland Front coup that ousted the wartime monarchy. The date matters: Bulgaria had been a German ally, and the overnight switch in alignment — accomplished with Soviet troops already inside the country — remains one of the more cynical pivots of the late war period.
Copper-nickel commemoratives of this type were struck in relatively modest quantities and saw little genuine circulation, absorbed quickly by state-controlled collector channels.
