Issued to mark the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state, this coin belongs to a sprawling commemorative program the Bulgarian National Bank released throughout 1981. The "1300 Years Bulgaria" series ran to dozens of types, many struck in both base metal and silver, flooding collector markets and diluting secondary values across the board. The Mother and Child type was one of several in the program tied to UNESCO's declared International Year of the Child — itself a 1979 initiative whose commemorative aftershocks rolled through state mints well into the early 1980s.
