Reverse description The central field depicts the renowned Madara Rider, a monumental early medieval rock relief: a triumphant horseman mounted on a rearing horse, thrusting a spear downward into a lion prostrate beneath the horse's hooves, while an eagle flies before the procession. The composition faithfully reproduces the famous 8th-century bas-relief carved approximately 23 metres high on the Madara Plateau cliff face, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enduring symbol of the First Bulgarian Empire. The design is rendered in high relief against a plain field, capturing the heroic and imperial character of the original carving.
