Dobri Chintulov (1823–1886) was a Bulgarian poet and teacher whose nationalist verse circulated widely during the Ottoman period, when publishing such sentiments carried real risk. The 1972 commemorative series honoring Bulgarian cultural figures was issued under Zhivkov's government, which actively promoted pre-Liberation intellectuals as ideological anchors for socialist national identity — a careful domestication of 19th-century revolutionary sentiment into state-approved patriotism.
