Obverse description Bare-headed youthful effigy of King George I facing left, rendered in low relief with finely detailed hair. The encircling legend reads ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α! ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ, identifying the monarch as George I, King of the Greeks. The date 1869 appears in the lower exergue, and the engraver's signature ΒΑΡΡΕ is incised beneath the truncation of the portrait. The design reflects the neoclassical medallic style characteristic of Désiré-Albert Barre's work at the Paris and Strasbourg mints.
