Otto of Greece, a Bavarian prince installed by the Great Powers in 1832, minted these small copper pieces as part of his kingdom's first indigenous coinage system. The lepton denominations were struck at the Athens mint, which had only recently been established — Greece had relied on foreign mints for earlier issues. Otto's reign ended in a military coup in 1862, and his coinage was subsequently demonetized, which accounts for the relatively low survival rate of circulating examples in any condition.
