Obverse description The winged Lion of St. Mark, symbol of Venetian and Ionian heritage, depicted passant to the right in the center of the field, bearing a nimbus (halo) above its head and holding an open book with a radiate cross in its left forepaw. The circular Greek legend ΙΟΝΙΚΟΝ ΚΡΑΤΟΣ (Ionian State) runs along the upper periphery, with the date below the lion's feet at the base of the design. The whole is surrounded by a finely milled border of beading.
