Sierra Leone's 1976 FAO issues were part of the Food and Agriculture Organization's global coin program, which recruited member nations to mint circulating commemoratives promoting agricultural development and food security initiatives. For Sierra Leone, a country whose economy remained heavily dependent on subsistence farming and diamond exports following independence in 1961, participation carried genuine domestic relevance rather than being purely ceremonial.
The FAO program at its peak involved over 100 countries and was quietly one of the most ambitious numismatic coordination efforts of the 20th century — largely forgotten now.
