The Bank of Sierra Leone was established by statute in 1963, just two years after independence, and this 2 Leones note belongs to the country's inaugural banknote series — the first issues ever made in the Leone, which replaced the British West African pound at par in August 1964. Thomas De La Rue handled the printing, as they did for a large share of newly independent African states during this period, often working from designs developed in close consultation with the new central banks.
The series ran until 1970, when a redesigned issue followed. Notes from the earliest dates within the 1964–1970 span are considerably harder to locate than later ones.
