Pattern strikes for Romanian coinage of this period were typically produced at the Brussels mint or in-house at Bucharest, serving as approval pieces submitted to the royal household before production authorization. Carol I took a direct personal interest in coinage design, and multiple competing patterns for standard denominations were struck in off-metal compositions — copper being the most common trial material — precisely to demonstrate relief and die quality under conditions different from the intended silver strikes.
KM#Pn176 is one of several documented 1910 patterns. Whether it advanced to formal royal review or remained a mint exercise is not established in the standard references.
