The bodu larin — "large larin" — was struck in the Maldives during a period when the islands' coinage system remained almost entirely isolated from the broader Indian Ocean monetary networks developing around it. Billon was the practical choice: the sultanate had no silver mines and depended on irregular imports, so copper-alloyed alloy stretched available metal without abandoning silver's nominal authority. KM#28.1 distinguishes this variety by the placement of the regnal year in the second line of the inscription, a die layout detail that separates it from otherwise near-identical concurrent issues.
