Muhammad Imaaduddeen IV ruled the Maldives as Sultan from 1835 until his death in 1881, a reign interrupted by a brief deposition in the 1850s during a period of internal dynastic conflict. The "Bodu" designation — meaning "large" in Dhivehi — distinguishes this issue from the smaller 2 Lari struck concurrently, a parallel production arrangement that reflects the practical monetary needs of an island economy dependent on small-denomination exchange for fish and coconut trading. Bronze coinage in the Maldives during this period was produced in limited quantities given the archipelago's isolation, and surviving examples with original surfaces are scarce.
