正面描述 Central field displays the national emblem of the Maldives: a coconut palm tree rising above a crescent and five-pointed star, flanked on either side by a national flag on a staff, all mounted upon a decorative ribbon banner. The Gregorian year 1960 appears along the left margin in Latin numerals, and the Hijri year ١٣٧٩ (1379) appears along the right margin in Eastern Arabic numerals. The design is rendered in moderate relief against a plain field within the square flan with rounded corners.

附加信息

Muhammad Fareed Didi ruled the Maldives as its last sultan before the country abolished the sultanate and declared a republic in 1968. This 1960 issue was struck during the twilight of that institution, though the sultanate had itself been briefly interrupted — a republic was declared in 1953 before being dissolved after just a few months following public opposition. The bronze coinage of this period was produced in quantities suited to the modest cash economy of a then-isolated archipelago whose primary trade remained dried fish and cowrie shells.
