The Maldives decimalised its currency in 1981, replacing the old kasi system, but this aluminium 2 Laari predates that reform — struck through the 1970s under the republic established after the 1968 referendum that permanently ended the sultanate. Aluminium was the practical choice for low-denomination coinage in a small island economy with limited hard currency reserves.
