Mehmed VI ascended to the throne in July 1918 with the Ottoman Empire already in military collapse, and this issue belongs to the final months of a dynasty that had endured six centuries. The armistice of Mudros was signed in October of that year, ending Ottoman participation in the war and placing Constantinople under Allied control within weeks of these coins entering circulation.
Mehmed VI was the last reigning sultan, deposed in 1922 when the Grand National Assembly abolished the sultanate. Coins struck under his name saw almost no meaningful circulation before the empire that issued them ceased to exist.
