Croatia's 1941 aluminum pattern issues were produced under the Ustaše-controlled Independent State of Croatia, a Nazi-backed puppet regime established in April of that year following the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia. This 2 Kune pattern in aluminum was part of a series of experimental strikes testing compositions for the new state's coinage — a coinage that was itself a political act, replacing Yugoslav currency with denominations tied to the revived Kuna, a monetary unit last used in medieval Croatia. Most of these patterns never progressed to circulation strikes.
