Denmark's 2-krone denomination had been absent from circulation for decades before its reintroduction in 1992, a decision driven partly by inflation eroding the practical value of smaller coins and partly by a broader Nordic-region shift toward rationalizing coin series. The piece circulated continuously under Margrethe II across an unusually long production window — over thirty years — surviving multiple rounds of European monetary debate during which Denmark repeatedly chose, by referendum, to retain the krone rather than adopt the euro.
The 1992 reintroduction also coincided with a redesign of the Danish coin series as a whole, prompted by the same Folketing session that revised effigy standards following Margrethe's 1990 portrait update.
