Issued to mark Christian X's 75th birthday on September 26, 1945, this coin carries a significance that goes well beyond dynastic celebration. Denmark had been liberated from German occupation just four months earlier, and the king — who had remained in Copenhagen throughout the war, famously continuing his daily horseback rides through the city streets — had become the symbolic anchor of Danish national resistance. A commemorative coin bearing his portrait in the first autumn of peace was a deliberate act of collective exhale.
Christian X died the following year, making this the last commemorative struck in his honor during his lifetime.
