Christian IV struck these heavy silver pieces during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict he would eventually enter in 1625 as the self-appointed champion of German Protestantism — a campaign that ended in catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Lutter in 1626 and cost Denmark significant territory. The multiple Davenport varieties catalogued under this type reflect die-axis and legend punctuation differences common to the Copenhagen mint's workshop practices of the period, where individual engravers worked with considerable autonomy.
The star in the legend is the distinguishing feature separating this from closely related contemporaneous issues, a seemingly minor detail that has generated persistent collector interest in variety attribution.
