Hajmáskér was one of the largest Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camps, holding primarily Russian and Serbian captives taken in the opening campaigns of the war. These camp scrip issues were an administrative necessity — the Habsburg military needed a way to let prisoners purchase canteen goods without allowing them access to circulating Austro-Hungarian crowns, which could fund escape attempts.
The Krone-denominated scrip was valid only within the camp perimeter and worthless outside it. That was the point.
