The Bishopric of Chur occupied an awkward political position throughout the eighteenth century — a Catholic ecclesiastical principality embedded within the Reformed Graubünden, dependent on Imperial protection yet perpetually at odds with its surrounding canton. Joseph Benedict von Flüe, who held the see from 1728 to 1754, issued these small billon kreuzers during a period of ongoing tension with the canton's Protestant majority over jurisdictional rights. The two-year production window of 1740–41 likely reflects a specific fiscal need rather than a sustained minting program.
