1621 places this coin squarely in the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, when Württemberg's Duke John Frederick I found his territory caught between Catholic League forces and the broader collapse of Protestant resistance following the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. The duchy's finances were under severe strain, and small silver fractions like this saw heavy circulation as military requisitioning and troop movements disrupted normal commerce across Swabia.
John Frederick died in 1628 while effectively a prisoner of Imperial forces, his duchy occupied by Tilly's troops from 1634 onward under his successor.
