Hugh XIII ruled a tiny remnant lordship in the Austrian Alps at a moment when the Thirty Years' War was draining coinage from every level of the imperial hierarchy. Montfort-Peggau's right to strike silver was legally precarious — the county had fragmented repeatedly through inheritance, and by the 1620s this branch held little more than a rump territory. The kreuzer issues of this period are among the last independent emissions before the line extinguished itself and the territory reverted to Habsburg administration.
