Frederick I of Württemberg held Montbéliard as a county from 1581 until his elevation to Duke of Württemberg in 1593 — the same year this series ends. The small silver issues from his Montbéliard tenure occupy an awkward numismatic space, too regionally specific for most Württemberg collectors and too German in character for most collectors of French provincial coinage, which has historically kept prices modest despite genuinely limited survival numbers.
