Frankfurt's status as a Free Imperial City gave its mint the right to strike coinage independently of any territorial prince, a privilege jealously guarded and periodically challenged by neighboring powers throughout the sixteenth century. The years bracketing this issue saw the city navigating the religious tensions of the early Reformation while maintaining its commercial dominance as host to the imperial elections and the great trade fairs.
