Ugocsai Világítási Rt. was a regional utility company — not a bank, not a municipality — issuing paper scrip during the chaotic interregnum of 1919, when Hungary's defeat in the First World War had collapsed normal monetary supply chains and local entities of almost any description stepped in to fill the void. A lighting company printing its own 2 Korona notes is an extreme example of how far that improvisation went.
Nagyszőllős (today Vynohradiv, Ukraine) changed hands repeatedly in 1919, passing through Hungarian, then Romanian, then Czechoslovak control before the Treaty of Trianon settled the matter. Which authority, if any, tolerated this scrip's circulation is unclear.
