Papua New Guinea's 2 Kina was among the earliest polymer notes issued anywhere in the world, part of the initial rollout of Guardian substrate technology developed by the Reserve Bank of Australia. The 9th South Pacific Games were held in Papua New Guinea in 1991, and the commemorative overprint on a circulating polymer denomination was an unusual choice — most countries at the time reserved Games issues for collector coins, not working currency.
With over twelve million printed, this was no limited commemorative. It circulated.
