Issued to mark Papua New Guinea's 25th anniversary of independence from Australian administration in 1975, this note is among the earlier commemorative polymer issues from Note Printing Australia — a printer whose polymer technology, developed initially by the Reserve Bank of Australia, was by 2000 still far from universally adopted globally. The choice of substrate for a commemorative rather than a workhorse circulation note was deliberate: polymer holds detail longer and resists the equatorial humidity that destroys paper notes rapidly in PNG.
