Tunisia's bimetallic coinage reform of the 1850s was driven largely by pressure from European trading partners demanding a rationalized monetary system compatible with French and Italian commercial standards. The 2 Kharub denomination sat at the fractional base of this reformed structure, and the dual-reign attribution — crediting both the Ottoman sultan Abdulmecid I as suzerain and Muhammad II Bey as local ruler — reflects the carefully managed political fiction of the period: Tunisia was functionally autonomous but nominally a vassal, and the coinage had to say so in metal.
At 0.40 g, these were among the smallest silver pieces in regular Ottoman-tributary circulation, and edge survival is typically poor even on lightly worn examples.
