The VOC kepings struck for Sumatra in the late eighteenth century were produced under increasingly chaotic administrative conditions as the Company lurched toward its formal dissolution in 1799. Error pieces from this series — struck off-center, double-struck, or with mismatched dies — are not rare as a class, but they do reflect the deteriorating quality controls at VOC minting operations during the Company's final years of solvency.
The C#22a designation covers a known range of die irregularities for this type.
