2 Kan Mon

Kaga Domain's paper money circulated in one of the wealthiest han in Tokugawa and early Meiji Japan — the Maeda clan's assessed rice yield of one million koku made Kaga the largest domain outside direct Tokugawa control. That wealth did not insulate it from the currency chaos of the late 1860s and early 1870s, when hundreds of domains issued their own hansatsu notes in anticipation of, or reaction to, the Meiji government's push toward monetary centralization.

By 1871, the new government ordered all domain currencies withdrawn following the abolition of the han system. Kaga hansatsu had an exceptionally short redemption window.
