Issued the year the Nationalist government formally established itself at Nanjing following the Northern Expedition, this coin was part of a broader effort to associate the new Kuomintang state with Sun Yat-sen, who had died in March 1925. Sun had never lived to see the unification he spent decades engineering. The memorial coinage served a nakedly political function — cementing his posthumous role as founding father at precisely the moment Chiang Kai-shek was consolidating power over the fractious Nationalist coalition.
Struck in relatively small quantities, genuine examples are frequently confused with the numerous contemporary counterfeits produced for the export and curio trade.
