Kwangsi Province operated with considerable autonomy during the warlord period, and its provincial mint issues of the early 1920s reflect that fragmentation of central authority. The "Kuei" character counterstamp — a regional identifier distinguishing Kwangsi issues from the otherwise near-identical Kwangtung types — was added specifically to control the flow of silver coinage across provincial boundaries, a persistent problem when neighboring mints struck to compatible standards.
Y#415a.1 designates the variety with the Kuei character in a particular die arrangement. Collectors should note that attribution between the closely related varieties hinges entirely on that single character's placement and style.
