Additional information

Vasyl Vyshyvanyi — born Wilhelm Franz von Habsburg-Lothringen — was an Austrian archduke who reinvented himself as a Ukrainian nationalist officer, learned the language fluently, and commanded Ukrainian Sich Riflemen during the First World War. His adoption of embroidered peasant shirts earned him the nickname "Vyshyvanyi," meaning the embroidered one. After the war he actively lobbied for Ukrainian independence and was at various points considered a candidate for a Ukrainian throne that never materialized. Soviet intelligence eventually lured him to Vienna in 1947; he died in a Kyiv prison in 1948.

The 2025 issue date places this coin within Ukraine's broader wartime effort to assert national historical identity through its circulating coinage program.
