| Reverse description | Within a central square frame, a front-facing swimmer is depicted in full figure, rendered in a dynamic athletic pose. Surrounding the square, bilingual inscriptions in both Cyrillic and Latin script identify the event: above, ІГРИ XXVIII ОЛІМПІАДИ; below, OLYMPIC GAMES XXVIII; to the left, АФІНИ 2004; and to the right, ATHENS 2004. The overall design commemorates Ukraine's participation in the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games held in Athens. |

Ukraine issued this coin two years ahead of the Athens Games as part of a broader Olympic preview series — a common practice among national mints seeking to extend collector revenue across multiple years rather than concentrating releases in a single Olympic year. The National Bank of Ukraine was particularly prolific with this approach in the early 2000s, producing anticipatory issues for both summer and winter games. The 2004 Athens Olympics were the first to return the Games to Greek soil since 1896, a fact the Ukrainian mint evidently considered worth commemorating well in advance.
