Serhii Ostapenko served as Prime Minister of the Ukrainian People's Republic for less than three months in early 1919, his government collapsing under simultaneous pressure from Bolshevik forces advancing from the east and internal political fractures within the Directory. He is a figure largely absent from Soviet-era historiography, which makes his appearance in Ukraine's commemorative coinage program after independence something of a quiet act of historical reclamation.
The coin is part of a long-running series rehabilitating figures of the short-lived UNR period — statesmen who governed in the gap between imperial collapse and Soviet consolidation.
