Oleksiy Kolomiychenko (1903–1993) was a Soviet-era Ukrainian ophthalmologist who developed keratoplasty techniques — corneal transplant surgery — that were genuinely innovative within the constraints of mid-20th century Soviet medicine. The National Bank of Ukraine has issued a long-running series of 2 hryvni commemoratives honoring Ukrainian scientists and cultural figures; this coin belongs to that program, which has produced well over two hundred distinct types since the late 1990s.
The sheer volume of issues in this series keeps secondary market premiums modest on most pieces.
