Additional information

Alchevsky was one of the most consequential industrial figures of the late Russian Empire — his ironworks at what is now Alchevsk in the Donbas became among the largest in the region by the 1890s. He died in 1901 under disputed circumstances, falling beneath a train at St. Petersburg's Vitebsk station; the official verdict was suicide, though the timing, immediately after a catastrophic credit collapse that wiped out his banking interests, left the matter permanently ambiguous.

The city bearing his name remained a working steel center into the 21st century — still operating when this coin was struck.
