Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a detailed architectural view of the main building of Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University, a neoclassical structure rendered in fine relief occupying the lower and central portions of the field. To the upper right, a portrait bust of the writer Mykola Gogol faces three-quarters left, his collar and cravat rendered in period style. The numeral '200' in large bold figures appears at the upper left, with the word 'РОКІВ' (years) inscribed beneath it, commemorating the institution's bicentennial. A curved decorative band sweeps across the upper field. The lower exergue bears the full Cyrillic legend 'НІЖИНСЬКИЙ ДЕРЖАВНИЙ УНІВЕРСИТЕТ ім. МИКОЛИ ГОГОЛЯ' on three lines against a recessed background.

Aanvullende informatie

Mykola Hohol — known in the West almost exclusively under the Russified form of his name, Gogol — was born in Sorochyntsi in the Poltava region in 1809 and studied at the Nizhyn Gymnasium of Higher Sciences, the institution that would eventually become the university this coin commemorates. His years there were famously miserable; he considered himself academically mediocre and his classmates largely agreed. The 2020 issue marks the 210th anniversary of his birth, part of Ukraine's sustained effort to reclaim him as a Ukrainian literary figure rather than a pillar of Russian imperial culture — a designation the two countries have contested with increasing sharpness.
