| Reverse description | The central field depicts the neoclassical facade of the main building of the National Mining Academy of Ukraine, designed by architect Oleksandr Beketov and completed in 1900, rendered in fine relief. The inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНА ГІРНИЧА АКАДЕМІЯ УКРАЇНИ curves around the design in two arcing lines, with the commemorative legend 100 РОКІВ appearing prominently within the field to mark the institution's centenary. The architectural rendering captures the symmetry and grandeur of the Beketov building with careful detail. |

Issued to mark the centenary of the National Mining Academy in Dnipropetrovsk, founded in 1899 during the industrial expansion of the Donbas coal and iron ore region. The academy trained generations of engineers who would go on to work the same mines that became geopolitical flashpoints a century later. Ukraine's commemorative 2 hryvni series of the late 1990s was produced under genuine fiscal strain — the hryvnia itself had only been introduced in 1996 to replace the interim karbovanets after hyperinflation wiped out savings across the country.
