Mykola Lysenko, the composer this coin commemorates, spent much of his career under direct pressure from Tsarist authorities who viewed the promotion of Ukrainian-language opera and choral music as a political act. He was. His 1903 setting of Ivan Kotlyarevsky's Natalka Poltavka became effectively a nationalist statement staged in musical form, and the Imperial censors knew it. The coin was issued on the 160th anniversary of his birth.
