Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Ukraine's liberation from Nazi occupation, this coin arrived during one of the most economically turbulent periods in the country's post-independence history — the hryvnia itself had only been introduced in 1996 to replace the catastrophically inflated karbovanets. Commemorative issues of this period were produced in relatively modest quantities, as the National Bank was simultaneously managing currency stabilization and had limited minting resources to divert toward collector programs.
